Magazine masthead

This is my magazine masthead i made using adobe illustrator, which allowed me to manipulate and change the font/font size and colours for my masthead. This added character and style to the masthead and also gives it a unique brand identity.

The process

Making my music magazine cover page and contents page was quite challenging but I was also able to gain a few new skills by using software’s that I’ve never used such as ‘Photoshop’ and ‘In Design’. I wanted to be able to create a professional looking magazine without it looking tacky I did this so that when people see my magazine they will take it seriously and actually be interested in what would have been inside if I did create a full magazine and I feel I was able to achieve that by using simple fonts and genre specific images to go with the theme of my college magazine. I also stuck by the three colour house style scheme to enhance my professionalised look using only white orange and black. I researched and used my own general knowledge about magazines to ensure mine was up to a good standard by using things such as a bold masthead to catch the audience’s eye, a few puff to make specific elements of the magazine to stand out such as the price and a voucher information, I also used a barcode to allow people to know that you can purchase it. And lastly I used cover lines for important information that will be accessible in the magazine. In addition to this I was able to then begin to create my contents page sticking to the three colour house style scheme to make the theme consistent within the magazine. I used a bold, large font size for my masthead to make it stand out just like how I did on the cover page; I then used a background image similar but not the same to the cover page to give the magazine some diversity. I listed all the page titles and numbers on the left side of the page allowing the background image to still be visible to the consumer. I kept the image plain and simple not draw away from the information listed on contents page. Furthermore my coverstar is used more than once within my front cover and contents page to show consistency to allow the consumer to know that the coverstar is someone who is presenting the main story and will be featured on a double page spread. Then every week the coverstar would change depending on the main story.

What when well
I think I was able to execute my magazine cover and contents page well as I included all the essential conventions to allow it look as professional as possible. I was also able to use ‘Photoshop’ and ‘In Design’ effectively to help bring my ideas to life due to my software skills that I was able to pick up quickly when taught by my teacher. I also enjoyed using these software’s as now making magazines etc. will be so much easier now I have the skills to do so. Furthermore I was able to be organized in planning my mag and contents as I used my time well to ensure I got everything done in time for it to be handed in. lastly I feel the ‘mise en scene’ of my cover and contents page has some depth and shows that the magazine is about a college and has a lot of genre specific conventions and wording that suits the magazine title.
Even better if
I believe magazine would be a lot better if I had advanced skills on how make a magazine and how to use Photoshop’ and ‘In Design’ to their full ability as this would have advanced the presentation and quality of my work and would have made my magazine stand out from the others. I also forgot to include one element into my magazine that included in my plan which was adding the (date, time and issue number); this would have made my magazine look more realistic and sellable. It would have also let the consumer know when the magazine was published and what issue it was.

Peer assessment
This magazine cover is effective because the use of fonts, colours and choice of text really draws in my attention. there is also wide range of media conventions being used throughout the cover and contents pages such as a bold masthead, use of cover lines and puffs to attract the consumer she has also used a barcode letting me know I can purchase it and her use of imagines compliments the information she has listed throughout both pages, allowing me to know that Ania knows what she is doing and is able to do it well; and as a consumer I would say I would be very interested to read the full magazine after seeing the cover page and contents page.

3 points of improvement

Use time more efficiently to allow enough time for editing and self-analysis to ensure my work is up to standard.
Learn how to use 'In Design' and 'Photoshop'  more to my advantage by playing about with the software.
Lastly i would improve my use and choice of photography to fit well to my genre of magazine to help the consumer have a good idea of what type of magazine i am producing.

Magazine analysis

This is the RWD music magazine cover
it has as bold font as its brand identity. There is also a 2 colour scheme house style which familiarises the consumer with its brand. There is a masthead above the crouched cover star (mid shot - full body) first thing you notice when looking at this front cover. His mouth is slightly open which could be seen as sexual and would draw in his female fans and the hip-hop and individual fans to read the magazine.
There are no puffs and no features to the magazine which gives the magazine cover a plain look. The cover stars name is in big font followed by a subtitle to entice and inform the audience what the article (if written) would be about. The cover star is also wearing black and white which contributes to the black and white house style given off. There is no barcode meaning it is a free online magazine.
There are social media icons at the bottom of the page showing that the consumer is more likely to be off a younger generation and also shows that this media can be accessed through different types media platforms they are available on.
Target audience 16+

The first part of the double page spread is taken up by medium shot of the coverstar. By having this picture here it anchors to the audience profile who the coverstar is, as some of the audience profile may be unaware of who he is unless they see a picture of him. It also allows any of his fan base reading this magazine, to use it as a poster. The background of the image is plain white, this will be so that he stands out in the picture and it also adds effect to the image. The cover star has a stern face that could indicate the seriousness of the written columns to the right of the page or how seriously he takes his career . His body language portrays the genre of music the coverstar specialises in which is grime.
The columns are set out right down the side of the page in a consistent font size in plain black giving off a simplistic feel to the magazine. The modal address is formal and precise, but still appeals to its target audience e.g. 16+.

This contents page is simple, containing just one image on the page with a lot of white space background to elude sophistication in the magazine. The magazine features are ordered in a simple list at the right of the page, giving readers a guidance of where to find specific features of the magazine also telling the reader that there is a lot of information found inside and that they could be getting good value for their money paid for the magazine. The headings of each page type are in bold, making them stand out and giving a summary of what they are about. The layout is clear and easy to read. The word contents is spread across the page width at the top in large black bold text to state the page and it’s purpose in the magazine.

My magazine front cover and contents

Front cover analysis

Double page spread

This is my own magazine double page spread i created in 'in desgin'

XXL mag analysis

This is my magazine that i analysed, i analysed the front cover and the contents page

This contents page simply and clearly highlights the significance of each page telling the reader what to read in the whole magazine. The main image is of the coverstar (kendrick lamar) takes up around half of the page expressing the vitality of the coverstar. Kendrick stands in a tilted position with he's hand up in the air on either side in an (aeroplane stance) portraying a powerfulness almost as if he if flying high in the music industry, this would draw in both male and female readers as they see an empowering man within the magazine. This relates to the purpose of the magazine: displaying a powerful influential figure within the music industry.

The title of this article is in bold letters and is almost not a title due to the fact that it is on the same line as the article. The set up of this double page spread is one that is commonly used as there is a lot written on one half of the page, and on the other there is an image of the artist featured on a full page  The artist who is the main feature is someone who is extremely well known in the music industry, the clothes are quite minimalistic suggesting he is someone who does not care too much about their appearance. his stance is very laid back but is also serious reflecting on the article written beside him it is also in different font sizes to indicate the importance of the very first part (from/to his fans) showing the importance of his fanbase. drawing away from the importance of what is written in the e second and third columns. The colourful colour scheme is something that fits well with the personality of the artist, and also is the same houstyle as the front cover creating consistency. All in all this double page spread is quite plain and does not catch your eye instantly due the simplistic feel of the article. which could indicate the target audience as slightly older than your average teen e.g 18+
